Choosing your venue is likely the first major decision you’ll make in your wedding planning process. It’s often the first wedding contract couples sign together. It dictates the rest of the planning, from potential vendors to the theme of the decorations. Be realistic and strategic during your search to find a wedding venue you’ll love!
As the backdrop for your wedding, you want your venue to reflect the overall tone of the day. If you are a boho bride looking for sunlight and natural textures, then a warehouse venue may not be the best fit. Hone in on your ideal ambiance and let that guide your search.
If you’re struggling to pinpoint the feeling of the day, try this exercise: Close your eyes and imagine yourself on your wedding day. What are you picturing, and how does it make you feel? Maybe it’s bright, cozy, intimate, or exciting. Whatever it is, you’ll want to find a space that captures that same aura.
While every choice you make during wedding planning should be in the best interest of you and your partner, you want to make sure that all of your guests feel welcome in the space as well. Consider if any of your guests would be uncomfortable in certain venues. Perhaps several guests have severe pollen allergies and would not fare well in a garden setting, or maybe some would benefit from a location with accessible bathrooms and an open layout. You want to include everyone on this special day, so write a list of accessibility requirements prior to touring venues.
Be careful not to fall in love with a wedding date before you fall in love with a venue. Unfortunately, your ideal date may not, and is probably not, an option at every single location…especially if you plan to get married in the peak season (April - October). Go in with an idea of when you’d like to get married, but be open about the date itself. If you do have a specific date already chosen, communicate that date with all of the venues you work with. If your date is unavailable, it’s best to move on in your search.
To an extent, the more wedding venues you tour, the more likely you are to find a location you love. But be careful of visiting too many: this can also leave you feeling confused and make you forget what you liked (or disliked) about each one. Look out for a later blog post detailing exactly what to consider when you tour venues!
